Well, this may not be what was in mind for this forum, but... I've been riding since the 1970's, and my current motorcycle is a 2009 Suzuki purchased new in 2010. It's just a DL-650, or "Wee Strom" There is a 1,000 cc version, but after test riding the 650, I knew it was plenty of machine for my purposes.
Danged thing has a 5+ gallon tank and averages well over 50 mpg, sometimes into the low 60's. 250 mile range is normal, 300 quite possible. It's a two-cylinder motor, I've heard it described as a V-Twin, and also as an L-Twin. I don't really care what it's called, it works great! Good power, great economy and runs quite nicely. There's a good little growl from the motor when I push it up into the power band and accelerate. Six speed transmission.
This photo is of an 1800 mile solo trip I made a few years back, through the outback of Oregon. My goodness, what a great distance machine this thing proved to be! I camped at night. There's a tent & sleeping bag in that duffle bag. The V-Strom is not a "real" dirt bike, but handles typical BLM & Forest Service roads quite nicely.
Outside of Frenchglenn, Oregon:
Rolled up on a young antelope buck in the National Antelope Refuge, Oregon. I shut off the motor, coasted to a stop, got out the camera and this one posed for me, only 20 yards away!
Made another big trip a few years later, nearly 3,000 miles over seven western states. Ten days on the road. Didn't do much dirt on that one. Camped a few nights then as well:
Did have one harrowing moment near Vantage, Washington. Fortunately the Suzuki sprang to my defense and saved me!
Anyone else here use a motorcycle for a little mixed pavement & dirt road "overlanding" ?
